UW-Superior alumna Ivy Vainio's photography is featured in a new 13 month calendar sponsored by the American Indian Community Housing Organization in Duluth.  The calendar features her powwow photographs that were included in her Naamijig:  Honoring Our Traditions exhibition.  The calendars are being sold as a fundraiser for AICHO's programs and are $16.95 each. They can be purchased online at www.aicho.org.

A class of 2013 graduate and multicultural student services specialist for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), Ivy is now in her 17th year with the university.  In 1999, the OMA office purchased an Olympus camera so someone in the office could help document events.  That someone was Ivy Vainio.  She has photo-documented her office and other university events ever since.  About 5 years ago, Ivy's husband Arne bought her a Canon Rebel camera from a local pawn shop and that is when Ivy started taking photography seriously.  She started bringing her camera to powwows and other Twin Ports multicultural events and hasn't stopped.  She also likes to take photos of objects found in nature.

Ivy's first photography exhibition was in the Jim Dan Hill Library spring semester of 2012 when she was a graduate student in the Communicating Arts program.  Since then, her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Gimaajii Building in Duluth, the Duluth Public Library, the Mille Lacs Indian Museum in Onamia, Minn., the Pillsbury House Gallery in Minneapolis, and will be featured at the Edge Center Gallery in Bigfork, Minn. until November 2.

Her work has been published internationally and nationally in such publications by Capture Minnesota, magazines, books, and newspapers.  She was the only UW-Superior student last spring to have been chosen as a finalist in a national college and high school book publication.

This past August, Ivy was interviewed by WTIP - North Shore Community Radio about her life as a photographer, her camera that she named "Chobi," and the Naamijig Calendar.  Listen to the interview online.

A calendar signing and photography exhibition of Ivy's work is being held on November 8, 2013 at Trepanier Hall in Duluth.  Trepanier Hall is located at 202 W. 2nd Street.  The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
